Chelmsford Garden Room FAQs

Chelmsford is a great place for a garden room. The weather is milder year round than many other parts of the UK, so you can enjoy your garden room no matter what time of year it is. It's also a gorgeous part of the country, with views of Heather Hills and some of the most beautiful farmland in the UK, which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own garden.

Chelmsford is a city in the county of Essex, England. It lies in the East of England, about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of London. It is the county town of Essex and its largest settlement. Chelmsford has a population of around 110,000 and has been twinned with the French town of Annonay, and Backnang in Germany. Essex is a popular area for garden rooms because being in the south of the British Isles, it gets more sun than areas up north!

Chelmsford has a fascinating history...

  • The city has its origins as a market town and was granted a royal charter in 1199 by King John.
  • Robert the Bruce may have been born in the nearby town of Writtle in 1274.
  • Chelmsford was also significantly involved in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Many of the leaders of the revolt were landowners from Cheltenham and the surrounding area.
  • 17th century Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins imprisoned many supposed 'witches' in Cheltenham.

The earliest records of Chelmsford date back to around 1200, when it was mentioned as Celmeresforte by Ralph of Coggeshall, the chronicler of Henry II. The town's name is derived from Ceolmaer's ford, or in modern English, Chelmer's ford: a crossing-place over the river Chelmer. Today, you might want a garden room to enjoy some of the views of "Ceolmaer's ford" that you can enjoy from your back garden.

The town has been a hub for manufacturing industry since the 19th century. It grew rapidly following the opening of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation in 1797, which connected it to the River Thames. The railway arrived in 1842, linking it with London. Chelmsford station has since been expanded with the addition of a bus station and retail park. Chelmsford's population today consists of a large number of City and Docklands commuters, attracted by the 30–35 minute journey into Central London via rail. The town has seen a rapid increase in growth and house prices since the 1990s, while employment levels have remained relatively static. So, if you have a job in the city and you need a space to relax and unwind after work, then a garden room would be perfect.

If you're thinking about adding a garden room to your Chelmsford home, Essex Garden can help. Our partners offer a wide range of garden room designs and can even custom build one to your exact specifications. Contact us for more information.

In most cases, you won't need planning permission for your garden room. Typical regulations state that if the room is below a certain height, is free standing, and is a certain distance from your neighbour's property, you won't need it. However, it's always best to check with your local council before you start building.

The cost of a garden room depends on a few factors, such as the size and style of the room. Generally, you can expect to pay around £8,000 for a small garden room and up to £20,000 for a large one. Like all things, you can get anything from a basic one to a premium one, which affects the price too.

Cheap garden rooms can cost as little as £8,000, depending on the size and style of the room. However, it's important to remember that you get what you pay for; a cheaper garden room may be made from lower quality materials, or feature things like plumbing, underfloor heating, multiple rooms, and other add-ons.

There are a few things to consider when it comes to materials for your garden room in Chelmsford. Firstly, you'll need to think about the climate; because Chelmsford is milder than other parts of the UK, you won't need to worry about insulation as much. However, you will still need to make sure that the materials you use can withstand the occasional downpour! We recommend using composite, because it's a sturdy, affordable material.

A wide range of garden room designs are available from places like Essex Garden. You can choose from a variety of styles, including contemporary, traditional, and rustic; whatever you prefer. You can either pick one of many premade garden room plans, or go the bespoke route, for a garden room made specifically for you.

The style of garden room that would suit your Chelmsford home will depend on a few things, such as the size of your garden and the style of your house. A more traditional-looking garden room in a deep red or brown would suit an old-fashioned brick terraced house, or semi-detached. Or, if you have a modern home, you could go for a glass-fronted garden room in white or cream.

At Essex Garden, we can help you find the perfect style of garden room for your Chelmsford home. Our partners offer a wide range of styles and can even custom build one to your exact specifications. Contact us for more information.

Considering you don't necessarily need planning permission, strictly speaking you can build a garden room yourself. However, it's important to remember that this is a big project, and you'll need to be confident in your abilities before you start. Also, remember that you'll need to factor in the cost of materials when you're calculating the cost of the project. We recommend letting an expert do it instead.

Composite garden rooms are made from composite, which is a mixture of plastic and wood. This material is very durable and low maintenance, making it a great choice for garden rooms. It's a very popular material for garden rooms as it's easy to clean and looks great.

Electric heaters are arguably best, because they don't require plumbing. But it is possible to have a plumbed-in garden room, so if you want good old-fashioned radiators instead, you can.

Your garden room should be a space for you to relax and unwind, so choose furniture that reflects that. Get a comfortable sofa or armchair, and make sure there's plenty of storage for things like books, magazines, and throws. You might also want to add a coffee table, side table, or lamp. Or, if you want something a bit more relaxed, you could try bean bags!

Chelmsford may not have the best weather in the UK, but it's certainly not the worst! The average temperature through winter does get low, but with an insulated garden room, you can still enjoy it all year round. If insulation isn't enough, these days you can get garden rooms with underfloor heating or even fully plumbed-in radiators to keep warm. And in the summer, a garden room with French doors/bi-fold doors can open up onto the garden and let in a fresh breeze.

So, if you're thinking about adding a garden room to your Chelmsford home, Essex Garden can help. Our partners offer a wide range of garden room designs and can even custom build one to your exact specifications. Contact us for more information.
